The Difference Custom Window Coverings Make that Often Gets Missed!

Bob and his wife Nance were unbelievably frustrated when we met them. They had found their perfect condo in Portland’s Pearl District, where they could truly enjoy life in their favorite part of the city. To make it their own, they reached out to a nearby national window coverings company for custom draperies and sheers, and that’s when the problems began.

Many of our custom window treatment clients come to us off the back of a bad experience with a “big-box” or national retailer who carries curtains and blinds. They assume that a large company is well-equipped to help them, but weeks or even months later, they find that it’s simply not the case. In the case of Bob and Nance, the problems carried on for an entire year. As Bob explained…

“After having a big-box national drapery and blinds retailer refund our money given their FOUR botched attempts to provide us with pleated draperies for our living and dining areas, we researched to find a small boutique firm that was highly rated.”

There was an apparent, common reason why this had happened. As the couple discovered, there are many critical steps involved in a successful window treatment installation, such as…

  • Design

  • Precise Measurements

  • Fabric and Hardware Selection

  • Fabrication

  • Installation

  • Quality Control

And unfortunately…

“The big-box retailer had a different person handling each of these steps, and there were a lot of miscommunications and unkept commitments...all FOUR TIMES.”

Successful Window Treatment Design and Installation Requires Strong Coordination

Bob and Nance’s experience is all too common. Beyond the miscommunications that happen when no one person owns the process, it’s also incredibly difficult to find who can help you fix a problem

  • Sometimes it’s hard to know who to contact.

  • Other times, you find each department trying to shift responsibility to another for the issue.

In the end, many people end up spending more time and money fixing the issues that come up than if they’d had one expert guiding them through the entire process.

That’s a huge part of the value of custom window treatment design that gets missed. Of course, there’s great value in having an expert help you craft the visual design, but there’s also great value in the process itself.

You get the personal attention you deserve, and the custom design process makes it easier to get things right the first time and protects you from wasted time and costly mistakes.

Here’s the difference when one person owns the custom design process

Bob noticed it even from his first conversation with our Window Fashion Designer, Marlys.

“Within 10 minutes of being with Marlys, we were convinced that we could get exactly the draperies we’d wanted. She was informative and committed that she handles every step of the process.”

Marlys met Bob and Nance at their condo and immediately saw how haphazardly the hemlines of their drapery panels were hanging. And, believe it or not, this is the kind of craftsmanship they had received.

Substandard craftsmanship NOT made by Adrette

They had previously seen catalog photos where the pleats hung in perfect uniformity, and that didn’t seem like too much to ask!

No two rooms are ever the same, and Marlys was able to solve issues unique to their home’s structure and interior design.

  1. Because their installation required a ceiling-to-floor mount, Marlys knew we had to choose suitable fabrics that would be stable and hold the hemline over time.

  2. We found a lovely linen look for the sheers and a little heavier linen fabric for the over drape.

  3. With special couture techniques, we were able to make the hemline stay in place exactly how they envisioned it.

They also wanted their window treatments to stack neatly and open up the beautiful view of the Portland skyline and the West Hills.

  1. Together, we selected modern Ripplefold draperies.

  2. These have a much smaller stack off to the side when open, allowing the couple to see more of their view.

  3. And they also match the clean, modern lines of their condo.

The problems they’d been trying to resolve for a year were addressed right away.

“Marlys delivered EXACTLY what we wanted, which was floor-to-ceiling (10 foot) draperies for over 70 feet of floor-to-ceiling windows. In addition, Marlys committed that the inner sheers and outer drapes would have symmetric floor-to-ceiling pleats. And this is exactly what was delivered. Not a simple install!”
