Elevating Elegance: Joanna's Bathroom Finds Renewed Grace with Custom Cornice Boards

Introduction: Renewing a Longtime Collaboration

Because we like working together so much, Joanna also wanted to update the swag valances in her bathroom. We had helped her with those originally, and as beautiful as they were, we decided to change them out to a simpler design.

Before and after transformation.

The Search for the Perfect Fabric

Joanna gave me the go-ahead to start looking for the perfect fabric and design that would tie into her newly redecorated main bedroom.  After much searching, I found a Colefax and Fowler linen sheer fabric with a medallion pattern in neutral tones and metallic threads that added just the right amount of sparkle.

The Design Process: Cornice Boards and Craftspeople

We both were fascinated with the idea of cornice boards but because the fabric was sheer, I knew we needed to first line the cornice boards with a solid lining.

It would take just the right craftspeople to fabricate this design! Next, I did a layout for Joanna so she could see on paper what the design of the cornice board would look like and where the repeats would fall on the shaped hems that would fall/play on the repeat of the medallions.

Visualization: Bringing the Design to Life

To help her visualize, I made a pattern that we pinned up over her existing valances so she could see exactly what the new cornice boards would look like and how much they would hang into the window over the existing shutters. As per her request, we used the original L-brackets, so no new holes were made into her plastered and hand-painted walls that were also hand-painted.

The Final Touch: Added Details for More Interest

To soften the cornice boards a bit more and add more interest, a Samuel & Sons Meteor Glass Bead Fringe was added to the bottom of the shaped cornices.

It completes the design by adding more interest.

Conclusion: A Happy Client and an Elevated Bathroom

Joanna couldn’t be happier with the new uplifting look of her new main bathroom.

It was important to her to leave the beautifully plastered and hand-painted walls untouched, and we were happy to honor Joanna’s request.
